Like other drugs, alcohol is a controlled substance in New Zealand. Because of this, there is a robust process in place to make sure you will be selling alcohol safely and responsibly.

What you will need

You'll need to provide supporting documents and plans with your application. To avoid delays and extra costs, it's important that you provide detailed, high-quality information.

Some of these documents will ask you to create plans for your business. Others will need to be applied for first through Wellington City Council or other agencies.

We strongly suggest that you have all of your documents ready before you start the form.

• Photo or artist's impression of the outside of the premises
• Town planning certificate
• Building certificate
• Record of title (also known as a certificate of title)
• Certificate of Incorporation (if applicable)
• Signed lease agreement (if you do not own the building)
• Duty manager's certificates
• Menus and drinks lists
• Host responsibility policy
• Security plan
• Staff training plan
• Noise management plan
• Outdoor management plan (if applicable)
• Land owner approval for sale of alcohol
• Building evacuation scheme declaration

Other information you will need

If you are applying as a company, you will need to know information about the company's directors and shareholders. This includes their date of birth and country where they were born. You will also need to know if they have any criminal convictions.
